UK Private HRT — Patient Information & Provider Directory

Patient information about UK private hormone replacement therapy. Service-cost framework for consultations, prescription fees and follow-up reviews, plus a directory of GMC, NMC and GPhC-registered providers. UK regulations restrict the advertising of prescription-only medicines to the public, so medicine brand prices are not displayed.

Important information for UK consumers

HRT products (oestrogen, progestogen, combined and testosterone preparations) are prescription-only medicines (POMs) in the UK. UK Human Medicines Regulations 2012 restrict the advertising of prescription medicines to the public. This page is general patient information about UK private HRT consultations — not an advertisement, not an offer of sale, and not medical advice. Whether any HRT product is clinically appropriate for you, and which product to use, is a decision for a UK-registered prescriber following an assessment.

Prices are collected from provider websites and verified against GPhC, CQC and GMC registers. How our data works →

How much does private HRT cost in the UK in 2026?

A private HRT specialist consultation in the UK costs £150–£450 for a first appointment and £100–£300 for follow-ups. Monthly prescription costs are quoted at the service level, not the medicine-brand level. Telehealth providers offer lower-cost consultations from around £60–£120. NHS HRT costs the standard NHS prescription charge per item (or free for those exempt) — but waiting times for menopause specialists can be months.

Prices are verified regularly and may change between checks. Last price change recorded: 31 March 2026.

Should you go private or use the NHS?

NHS route

NHS GPs can prescribe standard HRT (oestrogen patches/gel + progesterone). Free if you have a prescription prepayment certificate (£31.25 for 3 months). However, NHS GPs may have limited menopause expertise and appointment time.

Typical wait: 1–3 weeks for GP, 3–6 months for NHS menopause specialist

Private route

Same-day or next-day appointments. Choose your provider. No referral needed in most cases.

Typical wait: 24 hours – 1 week

When private HRT makes sense

Your GP is not confident prescribing HRT

Many GPs have limited menopause training. A private menopause specialist can assess and prescribe the full range of HRT options including testosterone and body-identical preparations.

You want testosterone (not routinely prescribed on NHS)

Testosterone for women is often only available via private menopause specialists. NHS GPs rarely prescribe it despite evidence supporting its use for libido, energy, and cognition.

You want a video consultation

Private menopause clinics like The Menopause Clinic, Newson Health, and online providers offer video consultations — often within days.

You want more time with a specialist

NHS appointments are typically 10 minutes. Private menopause consultations run 30–60 minutes, allowing thorough symptom assessment and treatment planning.

What to check before booking

  • Provider is CQC regulated or led by a GMC-registered doctor
  • Consultation includes full symptom assessment (not just a questionnaire)
  • Ask whether ongoing monitoring (blood tests) is included or extra
  • Check if prescriptions are sent to a pharmacy of your choice
  • Ask about follow-up policy — dose adjustment often needed in first 6 months

Questions to ask a provider

  • ?Do you prescribe body-identical HRT (not synthetic)?
  • ?Do you prescribe testosterone for women?
  • ?What blood tests do you recommend before and during HRT?
  • ?How often will I need follow-up appointments?
  • ?Can you write an NHS prescription once I'm stable?

Frequently asked questions

How much does private HRT cost?
Initial consultation: £150–350. Monthly medication: £20–80 depending on what is prescribed. Follow-ups: £80–200. Some providers offer subscription plans.
Can I get HRT on the NHS?
Yes — standard HRT is available via your NHS GP. With a prescription prepayment certificate (£31.25/3 months), you get unlimited NHS prescriptions. However, access to specialists and testosterone is limited on the NHS.
Is private HRT worth the cost?
If your NHS GP manages your HRT well, private may not be needed. Private is worth considering if you need specialist expertise, testosterone, faster access, or longer appointments for complex symptoms.

Tools & data

According to UK Human Medicines Regulations 2012, HRT is a prescription-only medicine (POM) in the UK and cannot be advertised to the public with brand-and-price pairings. TreatCompare therefore frames HRT cost comparison around the SERVICE components (consultation fee, prescription fee, dispensing) rather than the medicine price itself, which is set by the dispensing GPhC-registered pharmacy.

According to NHS prescription rules, eligible UK patients with an HRT-specific prescription pre-payment certificate (HRT PPC, £19.30 per year as of 2025-2026) pay a flat annual fee for all HRT items, regardless of how many products are prescribed. Patients who do not qualify for free prescriptions and do not buy the HRT PPC pay the standard prescription charge per item.

According to NICE NG23 (Menopause: diagnosis and management), HRT is recommended for vasomotor symptoms in eligible women after appropriate clinical assessment. Decisions on type (oestrogen-only, combined, testosterone add-on), route (transdermal, oral), and duration are clinical and must be made with a UK-registered prescriber.
