What's NOT available on the NHS

  • Ozempic for weight loss — licensed for type 2 diabetes only. NHS does not prescribe off-label for obesity.
  • Wegovy via GP — only available via specialist weight management services for most patients.
  • GLP-1 for cosmetic weight loss — NHS funding requires a medical indication (comorbidity).

Frequently asked questions

Can I get Mounjaro on the NHS?
Yes — since June 2025, GPs in England can prescribe Mounjaro (tirzepatide) for weight management. Eligibility depends on your BMI, health conditions, and which NHS England cohort you fall into.
What BMI do I need for NHS Mounjaro?
The current NHS threshold is BMI ≥ 35 (or ≥ 32.5 for South Asian, Chinese, Black African/Caribbean, and Middle Eastern backgrounds). You also need at least one weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea.
Can I get Ozempic on the NHS for weight loss?
No. Ozempic (semaglutide) is only licensed and prescribed on the NHS for type 2 diabetes management. It is not prescribed off-label for weight loss. Wegovy (also semaglutide, but at a higher dose) is licensed for weight management but is primarily available via specialist weight management services.
How much does private Mounjaro cost?
Private Mounjaro costs between £149 and £299 per month depending on the provider and dose. This typically includes online consultation, prescription, and delivery. Some providers also include monitoring and dietitian support.
What are the NHS Mounjaro cohorts?
NHS England is rolling out Mounjaro in three cohorts over 3 years, starting with the highest-BMI patients. Cohort 1 (BMI ≥ 40, or ≥ 37.5 ethnic-adjusted) opened in June 2025. Cohort 2 (BMI ≥ 37.5 / 35) opened late 2025. Cohort 3 (BMI ≥ 35 / 32.5) opened in early 2026. All cohorts require at least one weight-related comorbidity.
How long is the wait for NHS weight loss injections?
If your GP confirms eligibility, the prescription can be issued relatively quickly — weeks to a few months depending on GP capacity. However, you may need to be enrolled in an NHS weight management programme first, which can add waiting time. Private providers typically offer first treatment within 24–48 hours.
