Should you go private or use the NHS?
NHS route
Some travel vaccines are available free on the NHS through your GP practice nurse, including hepatitis A, typhoid, cholera (Dukoral), and polio boosters. However, many travel vaccines are not available on the NHS and must be paid for privately. These include yellow fever (£60-100), rabies (£50-70/dose), Japanese encephalitis (£90-110/dose), meningitis ACWY for travel (£40-65), tick-borne encephalitis (£55-75/dose), and hepatitis B (£30-60/dose). Malaria tablets are also not available on the NHS for travel.
Typical wait: 1–2 weeks (GP nurse appointment)
Private route
Same-day or next-day appointments. Choose your provider. No referral needed in most cases.
Typical wait: 24 hours – 1 week
When private travel vaccination makes sense
You need vaccines not available on the NHS
Yellow fever, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, meningitis ACWY, and tick-borne encephalitis vaccines are only available privately. You must visit a travel clinic or private provider for these.
You are travelling soon
Private travel clinics offer same-day and walk-in appointments. NHS GP nurse appointments may have a 1-2 week wait, which could be too late for imminent travel.
You need a Yellow Fever certificate
Yellow fever vaccine must be given at a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. Most NHS GPs are not registered centres — you will need a specialist travel clinic.
You want a comprehensive travel health assessment
Specialist travel clinics provide destination-specific risk assessments, malaria advice, and personalised vaccination schedules that go beyond what a standard GP appointment covers.
You need malaria tablets
Antimalarial prescriptions for travel are not available on the NHS. Private clinics and pharmacies offer same-day malaria tablet prescriptions at competitive prices.

According to NHS England, hepatitis A, typhoid, polio (combined boosters) and tetanus are free under NHS travel-vaccination policy in the UK. Yellow fever, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, meningococcal ACWY and the cholera oral vaccine are not NHS-funded and require a private travel clinic. Yellow fever vaccination must be administered at a NaTHNaC-approved yellow-fever centre.
According to TreatCompare research on published UK travel-clinic pricing, yellow fever vaccination typically costs £75-£90 per dose, rabies £75-£90 per dose (3 doses required for primary course), Japanese encephalitis £100-£130 per dose, and typhoid £30-£50 per dose. Travel consultation fees commonly £20-£50, sometimes waived if vaccines are purchased.
According to TravelHealthPro (NaTHNaC), destination-specific vaccine recommendations vary by country, region, season and traveller medical history. UK travellers should check destination-specific guidance via travelhealthpro.org.uk 6-8 weeks before travel to allow time for multi-dose vaccine schedules.

How we compare travel clinics
Prices are collected from provider websites and verified monthly. We compare standard vaccination and consultation fees — the price shown is for a single dose or consultation unless stated otherwise. Multi-dose course costs are shown per dose with the total course requirement noted. Prices may vary by location, appointment type, and specific travel requirements. We do not accept payment for ranking or inclusion.
