Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about comparing private healthcare prices in the UK.

Weight Loss Medications

Why does TreatCompare not list UK weight-loss medicine prices?
Mounjaro, Wegovy, Ozempic, Rybelsus and Nevolat are prescription-only medicines (POMs) in the UK. UK Human Medicines Regulations 2012 prohibit advertising prescription medicines to the public, and the MHRA has cited brand × price pairings on consumer sites in past enforcement. TreatCompare therefore does not display UK POM prices on consumer pages. See the patient-information pages for each medicine and the verified UK provider directory at /weight-loss.
What is the difference between Mounjaro and Wegovy?
Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist (Eli Lilly). Wegovy contains semaglutide 2.4mg, a GLP-1 receptor agonist (Novo Nordisk). Both are once-weekly subcutaneous injections licensed in the UK for weight management in eligible adults. Clinical-trial endpoints differ; suitability is a decision for a UK-registered prescriber.
Do I need a prescription for weight-loss injections in the UK?
Yes. Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy (semaglutide), Ozempic (semaglutide) and Nevolat (liraglutide) are all prescription-only medicines in the UK. They may only be supplied with a valid UK prescription from a registered prescriber after a clinical assessment, and must be dispensed by a GPhC-registered pharmacy.
What BMI do I need for weight-loss medicines?
Eligibility criteria depend on the specific medicine and the relevant NICE technology appraisal. NHS criteria are generally higher BMI thresholds, possibly with required comorbidities and (sometimes) ethnic-group-adjusted thresholds. Private prescribers apply clinical criteria following an assessment. Suitability is decided by a UK-registered prescriber, not by an online checker.
How is a course of Wegovy structured?
Wegovy follows a 5-step dose escalation over 16 weeks (0.25mg → 0.5mg → 1mg → 1.7mg → 2.4mg), then ongoing maintenance at 2.4mg under prescriber guidance. Treatment is typically ongoing; duration is a clinical decision. Service-level costs (consultation, monitoring, dispensing fees) are charged separately from the medicine itself.
Can I switch between GLP-1 medicines?
Yes, switching between GLP-1 medicines is possible but is a clinical decision for a UK-registered prescriber. A new clinical assessment is required, and you will typically restart at a lower dose on the new medicine. Always ensure any new provider is GPhC-registered.

HRT / Menopause

How much does private HRT cost in the UK?
Private HRT consultation fees range from £49 to £350, with a national median of around £195. The medicine itself is priced separately by the dispensing pharmacy at the point of dispensing — UK Human Medicines Regulations 2012 restrict the advertising of prescription medicines to the public, so TreatCompare does not display medicine-brand prices. TreatCompare compares consultation and service-level costs from UK menopause specialists.
Is private HRT lower-cost than NHS?
NHS prescriptions cost a flat £9.90 per item in England (or free with a prepayment certificate at £31.25 for 3 months). Private HRT is more expensive but offers shorter waiting times, longer appointments, and access to specialists. Use our NHS vs Private calculator to compare total costs.

Dental

How much do dental implants cost in the UK?
A single dental implant costs a national median of £2,500, with prices ranging from £585 (5th percentile) to £3,500 (95th percentile) based on data from 1,125 UK practices. Prices vary by region, implant brand, and whether bone grafting is required.
How much does Invisalign cost in the UK?
Orthodontic treatment including Invisalign has a national median price of £2,900, ranging from £1,395 to £4,495 based on data from 942 UK practices. Prices vary by complexity, brand, and whether you choose a specialist orthodontist or general dentist.
What are NHS dental charges in 2026?
NHS dental charges in England (effective 1 April 2026) are Band 1: £27.90 (check-up, X-rays, scale and polish), Band 2: £76.60 (fillings, extractions, root canals), Band 3: £332.10 (crowns, bridges, dentures). Urgent treatment costs £27.90. Private fees are higher but offer shorter waits and wider material choices.

Laser Eye Surgery & Eyecare

How much does laser eye surgery cost in the UK?
LASIK typically costs £1,000–£2,500 per eye from GOC-registered providers. SMILE surgery is £1,500–£3,000 per eye. Lens replacement (RLE) is £2,500–£4,500 per eye. Prices vary by provider, technology, and whether aftercare is included. TreatCompare compares prices from verified UK providers.
How much do contact lenses cost per month?
Monthly contact lens costs vary widely: daily disposables from £15–45/month, monthly lenses from £8–25/month, toric (astigmatism) lenses from £20–50/month. TreatCompare compares prices from 15+ UK contact lens retailers.

Aesthetics

How much do anti-wrinkle injections cost in the UK?
Anti-wrinkle injection treatment costs a national median of £170 for 1 area, £220 for 2 areas, and £270 for 3 areas, based on pricing data from 990 UK clinics. Central London prices are typically 10–15% higher than the national average. UK Human Medicines Regulations 2012 restrict the advertising of prescription-only botulinum toxin medicines to the public, so prices are quoted at the clinic-service level rather than against any specific medicine brand.

How TreatCompare Works

How does TreatCompare verify providers?
Every provider is verified against the relevant UK regulatory register: GPhC (General Pharmaceutical Council) for pharmacies, CQC (Care Quality Commission) for healthcare services, GMC (General Medical Council) for doctor-led clinics, GOC (General Optical Council) for opticians, and GDC (General Dental Council) for dental practices. Registration numbers are checked directly against the regulator.
How often are prices updated?
Provider prices are scraped weekly from provider websites across weight loss, eyecare, HRT, dental, aesthetics and other tracked categories. All prices are checked against median values for outlier detection. The date each price was last verified is shown on every listing.
Does TreatCompare receive payment from providers?
No. TreatCompare is independent. No provider pays for ranking, placement, or listing. Prices are collected directly from provider websites and displayed sorted by price or user preference. Our revenue model is not based on provider payments.
Is TreatCompare a pharmacy or healthcare provider?
No. TreatCompare is a price comparison service operated by Indexeli Intelligence Limited. We do not sell, prescribe, or dispense any treatments. We do not handle payments, prescriptions, or patient data. Users go directly to the provider to purchase.
