Paying for IVF in the UK

In vitro fertilisation: eggs are fertilised outside the body and an embryo is transferred.

Each row is one way of paying: the NHS, the NHS paying an independent provider, private medical insurance, and paying the provider yourself. Every figure links to the page it was read from, with the date. NHS waits are for England; charges for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are shown where they have been read. Where nothing is published, the table says so.

Share of IVF cycles that were NHS-funded, by nation, 2024

  • England: 24.85%
  • Northern Ireland: 50.03%
  • Scotland: 53.83%
  • Wales: 35.34%

Share of IVF cycles funded by the NHS. A share of cycles, not of patients, and not a measure of eligibility or of how many cycles an area funds. Nation and region are where the clinic is, not where the patient lives. The remaining cycles were not NHS-funded. The HFEA does not break that remainder down in this table.

46 of 109 HFEA-licensed clinics publish a readable fee schedule; most of the rest quote on enquiry.
