What is the average IVF success rate in the UK?

The HFEA national average is 28% of embryos transferred resulting in a birth, across all patient ages, for the period 01/01/2023 to 31/12/2023. For patients under 38 it is 34%, and for patients aged 38 and over it is 16%. This is measured per embryo transferred, not per cycle started, so it is not comparable to figures quoted on a per-cycle basis.

Do higher clinic success rates mean a better clinic?

Not on their own. HFEA figures are not adjusted for how complex each clinic’s patients are, so a clinic that treats older patients or harder cases will report lower rates while doing nothing worse. The denominator also varies enormously — a rate based on 60 embryos carries a much wider confidence range than one based on 2,000. HFEA publishes that range for every clinic and states whether the clinic is above, below or consistent with the national average; that verdict accounts for the uncertainty in a way the headline percentage does not.

Why do some UK clinics have no published success rate?

27 of the 109 HFEA-licensed clinics in this directory publish no outcome figures on their HFEA profile. That is usually because the clinic is newly licensed, does not perform the treatment, or has too few cycles for HFEA to report without identifying individual patients. HFEA also suppresses individual age bands where numbers are small, which is why some clinics below show a figure for one age group and not another.

What does "births per embryo transferred" mean?

It is the number of births divided by the number of embryos transferred, expressed as a percentage. A twin or triplet birth counts as one birth. It is not the same as the birth rate per cycle started or per egg collection, which use different denominators and produce different numbers for the same clinic. HFEA reports several measures per clinic; this page uses the one HFEA leads with.

How to read these figures

This is births per embryo transferred – excluding donor eggs and pgt-a — births divided by embryos transferred, with a twin or triplet birth counted once. It is not the birth rate per cycle started, and the two are not interchangeable.
The figures are not adjusted for patient case mix. A clinic treating older patients or more complex cases will report lower rates without performing worse.
HFEA’s confidence range matters more than the headline number where the denominator is small. Clinics are listed alphabetically, not ranked, because the ranges overlap across most of the register.
